If we had been on the ground, we would have sweltered in the infamous heat of Florida with the sun beating down upon us and the humidity of the season wreaking havoc on the crowd. Instead, as we made it up to the ninth floor where it was breezy and pleasant there was a tent set up to protect the attendees from the harsh Florida sun. My favorite part of the ORMC groundbreaking had to be the view.

We were able to listen to several speakers, each bright-eyed and passionate about the project that being undertaken. The ORMC groundbreaking is just the beginning of a renovation that will provide even more hospital space for patients by consolidating beds and increasing the size of their cardiovascular, surgical, critical care, pharmacy and laboratory areas. This is by far the most ambitious and significant project that ORMC has undertaken since the organization has started and has inspired much hope for the future medical care of Orlando. During the ORMC groundbreaking, several speakers expressed the admiration that they had towards the medical staff, who work tirelessly day in and day out to provide the families of Orlando the medical care and attention that they need.

We have had the distinct pleasure of working directly with the upbeat staff of Orlando Brewing on several occasions, shooting portraits of the staff which are displayed in the taproom of the brewery and taking photos for some of their ad campaigns. It has been such a rewarding experience to interact with staff members of Orlando Brewing who are so clearly passionate about their craft.

Once you see the care and effort Orlando Brewing puts into ensuring their beers are made with fresh, natural ingredients, it is difficult to settle for anything less. This past week we have been working with Dermastart, a professional skin care company that uses fine ingredients to cater to every skin type. Shooting their luxurious Prana line at our studio has been quite a treat with their sleek and beautifully colored labels. We have been shooting a large number of high-end products within the line and working with various shapes, sizes, and textures to find the best method of capturing their unique and detailed designs.

Zach’s Zombie Sauce was in search for a product photographer in Orlando, and they came to us with their line. Soon we will be helping them in an upcoming shoot to photography their product. Their hot sauce contains spicy peppers and spices from various regions around the globe, coming together to create a remarkably delicious blend of flavor and heat. I had the pleasure of photographing the Pub, the staff and various patrons a couple weeks ago and it was obvious the brunt of the people there were having a very good time.

I look forward to returning to the Pub on I-Drive in Orlando, FL and doing a little more photography there as well.

The Canon 5D Mk III is an all around triple step up from the earlier model. Low light focusing means the camera clicks when its dim, sharper images and less frustration. The low levels of noise at higher ISO’s is something that is impressive. Ken at Colonial Photo & Hobby told me that they tested the Canon 5D Mk III at one of the highest ISO’s in the closet and got nearly no noise. I don’t know if Colonial Photo and Hobby was shooting JPEG’s or RAW, but I do agree the 5D Mk III is astounding in this respect as well.

I am not clear when Colonial Photo & Hobby will get the battery grip for the Canon 5D Mk III, but I am sure it will be within the next coming 2-6 weeks. Well, actually I am not sure. But it seemed like the thing to say.

Regarding video, the Canon 5D Mk III has corrected 50% off the issues from the previous model. I mean, let’s get real, a DSLR is a compromise from a true professional video camera. But for the money, the footage can be absolutely stunning. You’ll still likely want a backup mode of audio recording if the footage really matters (Zoom H4n, etc) and possibly one of the higher end $450 Beachtek’s for input.

Breaking out of the 12 minute box is great and now you can ease up and concentrate or more important things than worrying when you need to stop the action and/or hit record again. Consider IDC Follow Focus with the plate that marries to the 5D Mk III if you have it in the budget.

Another great thing about buying your 5D Mk III at Colonial Photo and Hobby if you are into video is that you can stop by their DSLR rig area and test out the gear. I believe Colonial Photo and Hobby even carries boom poles and other quasi-obscure stuff you wouldn’t typically expect to find in a photography store in Orlando.

What can I say. Buy local. Buy your Canon 5D Mk2 at Colonial Photo and Hobby if you live in Orlando.

Harmon has a retail storefront across from Lk Ivanhoe near downtown Orlando, Florida. The school, called Harmon’s School of Photography offers a myriad of workshops and mini courses that I believe are well worth the investment of anyone who is looking to expand their knowledge. While there might be a tidbit or two for professional photographers, the courses are geared more towards beginner and intermediate photographers.

The Crealde School of Art is another place worth investigating. The school offers several courses in photography and the courses are reasonably priced. The school is located in Winter Park on Aloma Ave.

Another great resource for learning photography is the Orlando Camera Club. There you will meet amateur and professional photographers alike. In addition to lectures, workshops, field trips and photo competitions, you are sure to rub shoulders with other photography enthusiasts eager to share their passion and knowledge.
